not a requirement, it's helpful to get a better grasp on the genre itself but harmful to those who are susceptible to taking too much inspiration from others and ending up with a knockoff story of a popular book

I'm dying of brain cancer and I came up with the idea that I want to tell my life story in hopes of maybe inspiring somebody or helping somebody else through trauma in life. I have this is trauma from my 13th and 14th year that has haunted me all my life absolutely ruined my life actually I never married never had children destroy all my relationships with women. I confess to God until at least one other human being and tried to move forward in my life and put it behind me, but of course it's always there. I'll be 60 on my next birthday what if I was to add this trauma to my memoirs all My Good Life works and help and friendships that I've had could possibly be totally damaged and on today's judgmental attitudes of appropriate behavior and inappropriate behavior dangerous or even worse. How do I write a memoir and keep such a huge secret that could reunion my family and my life memory that I'm trying to preserve. What would you do?

So, write a book to gain a following of people that want to hire you for your “other” services… huh!? Hire an editor that’s in your budget… huh!? My brain isn’t accustomed to thinking about increasing my clientele for my 3d printed horseshoe business by writing a book. So, if I have no money to afford an editor, I guess I’ll just continue editing the book on my own. Also, if I’m spending a small amount of money on an editor because its what I set aside for it, doesn’t that mean I’m getting lower quality editing, so I should just stick to doing it on my own?

This was a terrific interview, but it also reminded me of one big truth about getting your book published with a traditional publisher: It helps to know somebody (that's how Emery found the agent who was critical to her reaching out to the more appropriate publishers). When you don't know somebody and are reaching out to hundreds of agents, most of whom never even acknowledge receipt of your work, well, that's a very lonely and frustrating and discouraging (not to mention exhausting) process to have to go through. Thank you, though, for a most informative and lively discussion.

Amazing interview. Exellent content. I've never heard anyone but Kelly talk about this potential path to publishing. I didn't know that it existed. One tiny critique: the edits were a bit jarring for me. I don't find it necessary to cut out the awkward parts and moments of silence. It feels better to leave it all in there, so that it's a bit more authentic. People are accustomed to long podcasts with little to no edits these days. I could have listened to this for an hour.

Yeah, girl I like what you’re saying and it’s very encouraging. I found you because out of the blue at 65 I finally realized I have an entire story to tell and am ready to tell it. I began to research. It would be wonderful if from the jump it became a NY Best seller, but it’s also therapeutic and a goal. Some people will find it, and I do believe that. However, if I never try to learn to write it and do it, no one will ever find it. Thanks for your optimistic spirit 👍🏽

Okay, I've gained some insights and had to watch this video a couple of times, but I didn't actually know what to do next. Okay, I have an idea of someone I want to connect with. I should binge-read their books since I don’t have a podcast or blog. If I did have a significant online presence, I wouldn’t need this video. After reading, I should write a review for the ones I like. Then I guess I need to inform them, 'Hey, I wrote a review for you.' What should I do next? Should I ask them questions that I genuinely have at this point and try to start a conversation? We don’t have any networking connections, and honestly, I live in a place where literary networking events aren’t common. And then I’m supposed to write, somehow, a subtle ‘if you’d like’ ask? Like something along the lines of, ‘I really liked [specific aspect]. I’d love to have you as a beta reader, as your feedback is very interesting to me. Do you do that?’ Or something similar? Then they will know who I am and what I write, and from there, the possibilities are open (?) Sorry, can you break it down into simple steps for human mortals who have never networked before? They feel inspired but need a step-by-step guide that doesn’t require traveling to networking events in different countries.

I like that you share stuff based on your experience and don’t just tell people what to do. Anyway, a couple of notes and questions: 1. 'Words of praise' sounded a bit too much to me. I recently wanted to publish a digital product and asked for feedback. Then I edited it for brevity and asked the beta reader if I could show it as a review. He agreed. What do you think about that approach? Just asking them how the book was, summarizing it in their own words, and not making the big ask of creating their own endorsement? 2. About the help part - okay, I see why an established editor like you could do some favors. I just wish some established author in my industry had something they could ask from me. 3. Established authors in the industry. Which industry? Amazon lets you put your book into 3 categories. 4. I don’t have any idea what you mean by 'canon.' Do you mean that our books are similar? Honestly, I don’t think I’d be persuaded by that if I were in their shoes. The only thing that might move me to endorse a stranger, being brutally honest, is if this stranger had helped me in the past or has a following.

Just wrote my first draft this summer, but I have been researching the topic, the book of Revelation, for 3-4 years from hearing other people's takes followed by 2 years on my own, with almost nothing but the Word and the Holy Spirit. I never thought I would understand any book of the Bible well enough to write a book on it, let alone Revelation, but God has been so good to me! Praise the Lord! And yes, once I sat down to write it over the summer, since I teach through the year, the book came so easily. I do feel like some parts are much stronger than others, and so during the editing phase I want to strengthen the weaker parts and clarify the difficult content as much as possible. Hopefully, others will agree that this is the book I was born to write. My biblical knowledge and understanding has certainly exploded many times over.

If anyone is looking for a publisher, here is one I do not recommend: Austin Macauley. They recently made sure not to report a few book sales to me, as best I can tell. You can press the CC button at the bottom of the video to turn on closed captioning to read what Kelly says. Hope that helps!

Could transformational be a combination of the two? Or would it simply fall under autobiography? Thanks 🙂

We work with a lot of authors who are writing what we call a "Teaching Memoir." We have an example of what this kind of book would look like in our outline templates: resources.knliterary.com/3-Classic-Book-Outlines

Always the mom and dad at fault… too many memoirists don’t turn the spotlight where it belongs, on themselves.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. You might enjoy this interview Kelly did with author Kate Christensen. She speaks about not having arguments with people through your writing. ua-cam.com/video/NnnoCa7CjBc/v-deo.htmlsi=HNC9hSh369hdq5RY

I did this exercise just now. It took me an hour. It was hard to think of what to write, but I did it. I know it's stream of consciousness, but I still got hung up on thinking of what to write. I'm glad I did it, though. It sure stirred up some memories, both good and bad, and sure enough, there was some stuff I was hesitant to write. Thank you for this video! I definitely want to write something. Writing a memoir is something I want to do, among other things. It's hard to write, but I think I am enjoying the struggle of turning the gears in my brain to get thoughts out and onto paper. And I do like writing with pen and paper. Exercises like this are great!

I made 100 things, that was all bed=fore I was 18. Please, I need your help if you are able. I must get my stories out. I am asking a lot. I am overwhelmed with trauma stories I need to write of. I will follow your advice and do the work, I need guidance and direction. I have so many questions I need answered and I understand your position. If you can, even a little, please will you send me an email to Lara. P. Wallace with an address I can send questions needed answers to continue my progress. I understand if you don't but I am desperate. I am in therapy as we speak and have been for years, and I respect your position. I just need writing direction on things like, should I write a series of short stories , a novel or consider a sitcom or movie script? Thank you for your content and it has been useful. I hope I'm not sounding crazy, I just keep running into walls trying to write this. Anything you can advise me on getting my story out will be greatly appreciated. Ty again for content and time.

When you're ready, a coach or editor can help you transform your stories into a cohesive book. There are many great memoirs about difficult life stories. It may be helpful for you to read some of those.
